Barnstaple Town 1-3 Winchester City

(from Daily Echo)

Winchester City beat fellow Evostik Southern One (S & W) strugglers Barnstaple Town – after going 3-0 up in the first 33 minutes.

City began well, despite the 150-mile journey to north Devon, scoring three goals in ten minutes.

Captain Stuart Green opened the scoring, finding the bottom cotrner from Joe Briggs’ pass, and within a minute Craig Feeney doubled the lead after wriggling free of his marker.

Feeney then won a penalty dispatched by Howard Neighbour.

Barnstaple would have gone above Winchester had they won, but had to settle for a 51st-minute consolation goal, a fine volley from the edge of the area by Jack Jenkins.

They have now lost their last five, while City have their first league win for a month, after their previous two fixtures were abandoned and postponed.

Next up for City is a trip to Fleet Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup third round on Tuesday night.

Black armbands were worn and a minute’s silence observed by both clubs in memory of the 77 people who died, including several members of the Brazilian football team Chapecoense, in last Monday’s air disaster in Colombia.
