Citizens come unstuck
Winchester City suffered their second successive defeat this pre-season as Conference South neighbours, Havant and Waterlooville came away from the Simplyhealth City Ground 2-0 Victors. Two first-half goals from Ollie Dennett and Jonah Ayunga gave the Hawks the victory and a hot and humid Hampshire evening.
Havant had former Charlton Athletic midfielder, Simon Walton, starting along with experienced players such as Anthony Straker and former Portsmouth youngster, Brad Tarbuck.
City were missing several key players including Oli Bailey, George Short and Liam Gilbert, but welcomed back Graham Williams. Trialist Lewis Plackett was once again on show for the hosts and young keeper Harry Birchnall also made another substitute appearance in the second-half.
City started well but two goals within seven first-half minutes put Havant in an unassailable lead. Dennett netted from close range before Jonah Ayunga took again from fully 25 yards to complete the scoring.
City's newest recruit, Max Smith, almost pulled a goal back, but the former Alton man was denied by a smart save by the visiting keeper. Olly Balmer also came close for City but his goal bound effort was blocked.
After the break, much of the game revolved around substitutions but City more than held their own for extended periods of the game.
