City and Fareham share the spoils
Winchester City drew their second successive pre-season friendly on Tuesday night away at Fareham Town. City went ahead at Cams Alders before The Creeksiders scored a late equaliser, just as Ringwood Town also did at the weekend, writes Matt Richbell.
Craig Davis used the opportunity to field two virtually different teams in each half. City were once again without a host of regular starters, including Ryan Pryce, Joe Hayward, Liam Gilbert, Olly Balmer, Rob Carr, Reece Rusher and Max Smith and Oli Bailey has now left the club to move up to Derbyshire.
The game started at a quick pace and Fareham came close to taking the lead but were denied by Felix Davies in the City goal. Billy Connor then almost put City ahead, but his goalbound effort was tipped over the bar.
Danny King had an ambitious attempt to score shortly before half-time, but after he took it past two Fareham defenders, his effort curled wide.
After half-time, City again started well and eventually took the lead when skipper, Jamie Barron, supplied new signing, Josh McCormick and his sumptuous effort went straight into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Fareham continued to battle and saw several efforts fly harmlessly over the crossbar. City were on course for their first pre-season victory when Fareham were awarded a penalty. Charlie Philpott saved the initial penalty, but the rebound was squeezed home from close range to earn Fareham a draw in this fixture.
