Header beats Hartley
A last-minute header from Kel Akpobire gave Winchester City a hard-fought 2-1 away win at Southampton Premier League side, Hartley Wintney, writes Matt Richbell. City came into the game on the back of a 1-1 at Wessex Premier League side, Baffins Milton Rovers, on Saturday. Both sides started brightly in a fast-flowing game but the conditions played their part with strong winds throughout and several heavy rain showers. It was City who drew first blood, when Olly Balmer dispossessed the home defence before supplying Jamie Barron who finished well with a low effort that went in off the post.
The hosts grew into the game after falling behind and eventually got back on level terms when Parker's corner supplied Wright who found the back of the net.
After the restart, it was much of the same, with both sides battling hard to breach each others' strong defences. Substitute, Rob Carr, made several forays into the box but he was unable to make a break through for City.
In the dying embers of the game, Hartley's Goalkeeper committed a foul on the edge of the box. From the resulting free-kick, Josh McCormick was denied his third pre-season goal by a fine save from the hosts' keeper. From the resulting corner, substitute, Kel Akpobire headed home leaving the Hartley keeper helpless and earning City their second pre-season victory.
