Winchester City maintained their 100% start to the season with an emphatic 5-1 win at home to Mangotsfield United on Tuesday night, writes Matt Richbell. For City this four wins from win and two from two in the league which saw them reach the summit of Southern League Division One South.
City flew out of the blocks and in-form forward, Olly Balmer (pictured), netted twice inside the opening ten minutes. Rob Carr twice came close to adding to City's lead but he saw his header loop just over and then he also had a strike that hit the post and went wide. Mangotsfield were restricted to several efforts from distance, all of which were comfortably gathered by Charlie Philpott in the City goal.
After the restart, Mangotsfield thought they had found their way back into the game when, after some penalty box pinball, the ball was eventually slammed home from close range. However, shortly afterwards, City skipper, Jamie Barron, raced into the box before coolly slotting past Jakob Glover in the visitors' goal. Barron was again involved shortly afterwards when Rob Carr was tripped in the box. Barron stepped up to take the penalty but his spot kick was saved and went out for a corner. From the resulting corner, Barron delivered and turned provider as Kieran Douglas popped up with a bullet header to make it 4-1. City weren't done there though, as Max Smith continued his impressive start to the season with another goal. The ball broke to Smith on the edge of the box and he lashed home to seal an impressive result and night at The Simplyhealth City Ground.
