Winchester 0 Kidlington 1 Match report
Kidlington whom Winchester also play in the F A Trophy are in their second season of Southern League football having transferred from the Central Division where they finished 12th last season. Prior to that they were a Hellenic League club for 52 years, spending the majority of that time in the league's lower division. In their ranks they had three Odihambo brothers, one of whom Anaclet played for Eastleigh in the 2001/02 season, with two of them being in action on Tuesday.
Early in proceedings both teams when corners produced goalmouth scrambles, but Winchester began to put the pressure on and Sam Warrell had to make good saves from Ben White twice, Oli Bailey and Adam Tomasso. At the other end Lewis Coyle forced a save from Ryan Price, and it was the visitors who took the lead in the 24th minute when Coyle followed up after Ryan Price was able to save, but not to hold on to Anaclet Odihambo's effort.
Before half time Jamie Barron had an effort deflected for a corner, while at the other end Declan Benjamin headed just over, but it was still 1-0 to the visitors at the interval.
Wincheser continued the pressure in the second half and in the 52nd minute they hit the underside of the bar following a header from a corner, and the ball seemed certain to cross the line, but somehow it stayed out and was eventually cleared to safety. Another two goal-line clearances also denied Winchester who also bought on Rob Carr, Simba Mlambo and the first two added some pace to the attack with player manager Davis using his experience in the middle of the park and despite some resilient defending by Kidlington the home team were able to put in some crosses.
Kidlington though despite absorbing a lot of pressure during the game got more dangerous on the counter attack as the second half progressed and Coyle came close with a free kick and substitute Callum Harvey came close on a couple of occasions, but a game that could have easily produced more goals ended with the visitors victorious as the result of a solitary goal. Both teams though responded at the weekend by winning F A Cup ties against former Southern League clubs who now play in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
