Winchester 0 Southampton U23 3
A Winchester team containing Andrew Jenkinson, Craig Davis, Simba Mlambo and IK Hill all of whom have featured in the first team squad this season, and several promising youngsters were beaten 3-0 by a strong Southampton under 23 team in the quarter finals of the Southampton Senior Cup.
Early on Olufela Olamola who has been playing regularly for Yeovil in league 2 came close to giving his side an early lead, but Nathan Tella gave his team the lead in the 16th minute scoring with a shot into the corner.
Although Olamola hit the post with a header the Winchester central defence pairing of captain Kieran Winman made some important interceptions and the home team did well to go into the interval only 1-0 behind. In fact Josh McCormick had a couple of half chances one of which forced the Southampton goalkeeper into making a routine save. Right at the end of the first half though Siph Mdlalose had an effort for the visitors that was only narrowly off target, while Tom O'Connor forced a good save from Josh Toombs.
Southampton though introduced Tyreke Johnson came on for the visitors and his pace on the left wing presented problems for Winchester. He had a goal disallowed and set up Callum Slattery whose effort was over the bar.
However two goals midway through the half ended the game as a contest. The
first came when Johnson was able to get on the end of a cross from Mdlalose, and two minutes later Mdlalose made it 3-0 when he converted from close range.
From then it was a damage limitation exercise and although all the chances fell to the visitors with Olamola hitting the woodwork the young Winchester team kept going right to the end. with the experience benefitting their soccer education enormously.
