Winchester 1-0 Wimborne
Winchester 1-0 Wimborne
What a great weekend for us that was, 6 points bagged, clean sheet and a good win against a local(ish) rival, couldn't have asked for more really! Massive amounts of credit to my whole squad of players and staff for a good job done.
So we welcomed back Simba to the squad today from who travelled on Saturday. It's a tough one on a bank holiday to know if you should make changes as it's a tight turnaround of games, we decided to start the same as Saturday as they earnt the right to start in my opinion, I knew though that tired legs after a long journey (not to be underestimated how that takes extra out of players) and game Saturday would be a factor.
I thought it was a fairly scrappy game on the most part today, absolutely boiling hot weather rarely makes for a spectacle on the pitch, nice to watch in though. I thought we looked the better side throughout the first half despite not really getting into our rhythm fully, a number of decent chances and moves particularly down the right side had us looking good. We had to contend with a couple of corners one of which we scrambled away and the other a great save from Prycey, that was it from them really. We got deservedly ahead with a Josh Harfield header from a Barron cross, that gave us a 1-0 lead at the break.
Second half I felt for 15/20 minutes we imposed ourselves on them a lot more and were looking for that killer goal, again without playing our sparking best, all the while that didn't come it gave them a foothold in the game. They started to throw men forward which caused us a few anxious moments, we made 3 changes all of which were tactical and worked for us in nullifying them really and whilst they had a spell we contained it with one good save from Prycey. We still had chances with Simba nearly scoring a header and a couple of good chances in the box which we made bad choices on, choosing a shot when a cut back was on. I have to say we closed the game out very well and that was pleasing.
In many ways winning a scrappy 1-0 is the best way to win, shows good character and spirit to dig it out, I have to say that these lads are a great bunch, the amount of effort going in to get things right from the players and staff is huge. We are not anywhere near where I want us to be or where I think this group can go, however I couldn't ask more in terms of effort, we are going to keep striving to improve in every way.
For now though we can be satisfied with 9 points from 12 and a very tricky facup tie hurdled. It's not been an easy start, all the sides we have played have picked up a number of decent results and some very tough places to go, so we can take confidence from that.
Next weekend will be a tough game, yet another tough trip, we will be ready for it though and hopefully can produce the performance we need to get a positive result!
Up the citizens!!!
