Winchester 1 Petersfield 1 F A Trophy

on Sun 9 Oct

Winchester's Preliminary round tie with Petersfield which saw manager Ian Saunders come up against his former club resulted in a replay being required at Love Lane on Tuesday.

The two clubs also met in last season's corresponding round, but for this game Winchester bought in Joe Briggs for Jason Silver as the only change to the starting line-up from Tuesday's league cup win at AFC Totton, with Silver reverting to being on the substitutes bench.

In the early stages Matt Petts in the Petersfield goal had to tip one effort over the bar, Craig Feeney had a shot saved and Adam Roberts had a shot blocked, while at the other and Lewis Noice in the Winchester goal just beat Daniel Simmonds to the ball.

Stuart Green then came very close to giving Winchester the lead, but his effort was blocked by the legs of Petts.  However shortly afterwards in the 21st minute of the game Green crossed for Robbie Matthews to head home his first goal forb the club.

Having taken the lead Winchester looked comfortable and it was a surprise when Petersfield drew level 10 minutes later with an excellent long range shot from  captain Daniel Simmonds who during the game covered a lot of ground in linking midfield and attack.

During the remainder of the first half neither goalkeeper was seriously tested, but Winchester started the second half positively forcing several corners and putting the visitors on the back foot.  Sam Wilson had a shot saved, Joe Briggs had an effort deflected into the side netting and a powerfully struck shot from Robbie Matthews was only just off target.

Winchester bought on Howard Neighbour as substitute and shortly after he came on Stuart Green only just failed to get a decisive touch to one of his crosses.  It was not all one way traffic as Daniel Simmonds forced a save from Noice and Petersfield did at times look threatening on the break.

However there was no further score and Tuesday's replay will determine who visits Fleet conquerors of Bideford in the next round.

On Saturday we are at home to Didcot in a rearranged match as our scheduled opponents North Leigh are in F A Cup action at Eastleigh, and on the following Tuesday we are away to Shortwood.  In the league cup we will be away to Salisbury.
