Winchester 3 Fleet 0

on Sun 31 Mar

Winchester scored 3 goals in the last 17 minutes to beat Fleet 3-0 and consolidate their 5th placed position in the table.

The match attracted a crowd of 202 which was boosted by a sizeable junior contingent who at the start of the game accompanied the players on to the pitch.  Fleet despite their lowly position had a good contingent of fans who provided them with good vocal support.  The match was sponsored by Phil Watkins, his partner Ruth and his children Josh and Dylan.  Phil is in fact a Blandford based AFC Bournemouth fan whom the club thanks for his support,

Fleet are bottom of the table with 16 points obtained from 5 wins and 1 draw, but the game was given an added spice by the fact that manager Craig Davis and players Ryan Pryce, Josh Harfield, Simba Mlambo and Rob Carr all joined the club from Fleet.

Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from the previous Saturday with Rob Carr and Graham Williams coming in for I K Hill and Joe Hayward both of whom dropped to the bench with Hayward having been abroad with work this week.  Fleet for their part had a young team.

Early on from a Jamie Barron corner Rob Flooks headed only fractionally over the cross bar and there followed a succession of Winchester corners.  A powerful shot from Joe Cook was only just off target and from a ball from Jamie Barron Oli Bailey also shot just wide.  Bailey and Rob Carr also had shots saved, but Fleet were defending determinedly ands looking at times dangerous on the break, and Winchester were unable to find a breakthrough in the first half.

At half time Winchester replaced Graham Williams with Joe Hayward.  Early in the second half Fleet's Kofi Halliday had a shot blocked, but the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 52nd minute for a foul by Bradley Wilson on Danny King.  Although Joe Cook who was not afraid to shoot from distance had another effort just off target and Rob Flooks had a header saved following a cross from Josh Harfield Winchester were not finding it easy against 10 men and were at times over hitting passes.

Winchester replaced Liam Gilbert and Rob Carr with Dave Jerrard and Tyrell Mitford and the introduction of Mitford had an immediate impact when he scored directly from a free kick in the 73rd minute,  Further long range shots by Joe Cook and Jamie Barron in the next 10 minutes completed the victory and before the end Shaun Derry did well to tip an effort from Mitford over the bar.
