Winchester 4 Alresford 3
Winchester reached the semi finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup for the third successive season as they beat Sydenhams Wessex League club 4-3 in an eventful match. The Alresford team contained former Winchester favourite Geoff Dunn and had other familiar names such as Sam Doswell and Aaron Blaxall although Chris Mason was not playing and Ben White was cup-tied.
Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Wednesday's game at Slimbridge with Rob Carr replacing the injured Jamie Barron with other positional changes being made to accommodate this and Adam Tomasso assuming the captaincy,
Early on a good run by Carr resulted in the ball being put through to Oli Bailey and an Alresford player in trying to clear forced visiting goalkeeper Daniel Kempson to make a save. The Alresford goalkeeper had a further save to make, but Winchester took the lead when a long throw by Joe Hayward was flicked on for Bailey to score.
It was then the turn of Winchester goalkeeper Ryan Pryce to make a good save, but Alresford drew level in the 33rd minute when Craig Harding got a decisive touch to a cross from the left.
Both teams had their attacking moments in the half, but it remained 1-1 at the interval.
There was a lively start to the second half with another Joe Hayward long throw led to a goalmouth scramble which resulted in a good save from Kempson. Sam Doswell made an important interception to keep Winchester out, while at the other end Tom Richards came close with a free kick.
Winchester however regained the lead in the 52nd minute when Liam Gilbert did well to keep the ball in on the right hand side and Rob Carr being the quickest to reach his cross.
Winchester looked to have made the game safe when from a foul on Oli Bailey the penalty kick was converted by Pat Cox in the 73rd minute. Substitute I K Hill also forced a good save from Kempson, but in the 80th minute Alresford pulled a goal back when Emmanuel Yeboah scored from outside the area.
A couple of minutes after the goal Alresford's Tom Richards received a second yellow card. However in the 87th minute a cross was not cleared and the ball broke to Sam Burt who scored at close range.
Despite being disappointed with their defending which led to Alresford pulling back the two goal deficit Winchester scored the winning goal in the 90th minute when Pat Cox scored after a corner was not cleared.
Even after this both teams were able to muster some attacks and there were other near misses in the game, but Winchester achieved their objective of reaching the semi final.
