Winchester City 1-1 Barnstaple Town
Bitterly disappointing day!! Ending up drawing the game 1-1 against a spirited Barnstaple side, in fact in the end after dominating the game with corner after corner but lacking any quality in our deliveries and final ball, we were indebted to a couple of decent Prycey saves to get at least the point.
I managed to bring in Ollie Griggs from Dorchester Town on loan, so he came in, with Tomasso still struggling with his foot and an impending 2 week absence we needed that cover desperately. Joe Cook and Gilbert still long term absentees, Brice ill, plus Barron, Hayward carrying injuries. Good news was Rob Carr back available after missing 2 games.
Dominated the first half but lacked quality throughout and despite so many set pieces couldn’t score, they broke and had a couple of strikes on goal, then Rob Carr brought down and a pen that was saved by their keeper. 0-0 at half time.
2nd half was much of the same really, huffed and puffed and dominated the game but very poor quality throughout, eventually went 1-0 up when Pat Cox put a penalty away. Then a couple of great chances which we didn’t take to kill the game off. Then a horrible piece of defending by Harfield to allow them in after giving the ball away very cheaply down our left and it was 1-1. After that it was a bit of a basketball match as we threw men forward but they broke well as well at times. Ended 1-1 and for our lack of quality and their endeavour they deserved it as well!
Truly gutting and sorry for the poor display and last 3 poor results, there is a whole host of reasons and excuses that could be given to the lads, but that’s a cop out, quite simply too many of our players are playing well below the standards that they set earlier in the season! So either we over achieved at times with our performances earlier in the season or some are massively under achieving with their displays currently! One things for sure, no stone will be unturned to try and rectify it and pull off something special in the coming weeks!
Up the citizens!
