Hythe & Dibden 3-8 Winchester City

Winchester City 2-2 Bideford

on Sat 15 Dec

n the end I have to look back on today relatively content with the point, obviously I turned up hoping to get 3 points, with how the game went and the conditions that we had to contend with you have to be relatively satisfied with the point that we have taken.

So we had Rob Flooks missing through injury but had Rob Carr back, we also added Graham Williams to the squad, he is a player well known to Sean Birchnall through his army connections, he has played in the Northern premier league previously but played has for Bemerton this season.

We had the difficulty of constant driving rain to deal with, with the distant they had to travel we did an early inspection and pitch was absolutely perfect, with every passing minute it got worse to the point that at Kick off some surface water was starting to lay on the top, for the rest of the game rain kept falling, full credit to the pitch though it held up quite well, the gusty winds and skidding pitch did make football difficult though.

1st half we gained some control of the game, we had a few good chances with Ty missing with a lob, then hitting the post as well before eventually scoring with a neat finish. They hit back and equalised with a run and shot through midfield, almost instantly we nearly went 2-1 up when Rob Carr nicked it past the keeper but it slipped just past the post. They had a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions and so from a position of total control we were pleased to get in level.

2nd half they scored very early (which we did last week) - we managed to stay positive though and remain in the game, eventually scoring with a Josh Harfield finish from a corner that wasn’t cleared. After that it was fairly end to end, we tried a few things to change the course of the game substitute wise, Griggsy came on for Joe Hayward who had an injury, also took a tiring Rob Carr off for IK Hill, the other change we made was taking Oli off and pushing Ty into the centre forward role, thenbringing Graham on at the back, this enabled us to push Cookie into CM where his driving runs from there in a game that was a midfield scrap we felt would work for us, it worked to a degree and he had a few good moments but we couldn’t get that goal we wanted and settled for the draw.

So that is 13 points from a possible 15 so that’s not a bad return! We now have to prepare for a game against Bristol Manor Farm who were the pre season favourites, they have a pedigree of player that we could only dream of, however they are in the bottom half, that won’t last long though and we will be in for an extremely difficult game next week, we will have to prepare ourselves properly for that!

Big thanks to everyone who turned up in such woeful conditions to support us! Roll on next week!

Up the citizens!
