Winchester City 6 East Cowes Vics 2

on Tue 19 Sep

Winchester won through to the last 16 of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a 6-2 win over East Cowes Vics.  East Cowes are currently in the lower reaches of Wessex Division 1, but had a good win against Fawley in the last round and are a club who played in the top flight of Wessex League football for many years with Southampton legend Nick Holmes amongst their former players.

For this match Winchester rested captain Jamie Barron, Josh Harfield and Andy Jenkinson with Adam Tomasso, Dan Williamson, Rob Carr and Ryan Price on the bench.  AS a result goalkeeper Callum Maher also known as a Southern League Premier Division cricketer, Gareth Byers, Joe Hayward, Riccardo Andrady, Craig Davis and Joe Hayward came into the side, with Adam Tomasso, Rob Carr, Dan Williamson and Ryan Pryce on the bench.  There was a welcome return from injury for Olly Bailey, with Dan King assuming the role of captain.

After East Cowes had a couple of attacks early on Winchester took the lead when Pat Cox headed home a corner from the right in the 3rd minute.

Simba Mlambo then put in a cross that no-one could on the end of, but from another of his crosses Cox headed home his second of the game.

East Cowes pulled a goal back when one of his colleagues headed the ball into his path and Jimmi Burton scored from close range.  East Cowes then had a good spell as the game became very end to end, but their hopes of getting back in the game suffered a significant blow at the end of the half when with the goalkeeper rushing out of his area in his efforts to close down Mlambo the result of his efforts saw the ball sliced back towards the visitors goal with attempts from East Cowes Vics defenders to keep the ball out being in vain.

Winchester Continued to attack in the early periods of the second half and scored further goals through Cox (his third headed goal) and Bailey.  Both goalkeepers had saves to make during this period of play with East Cowes Vics goalkeeper making saves from Bailey and a particularly good one when he tipped Ben White's effort over the bar.

East Cowes Vics however pulled a goal back when Burton scored his second following up after Maher had could only parry a shot into his path.

IK Hill came on as substitute and made many good runs on the right hand side shooting wide with a powerful shot on one occasion and crossing for Cox to score his fourth of the game and to complete the scoring.

The East Cowes Vics team contained sons of Island legends Kim Hopcroft and Adie Newbold and their secretary Darren Dyer is a grandson of Joe Reed who was secretary of the club for many years.

Winchester though finalists in 2016 and semi finalists in 2017 will eagerly await their opponents in the next round.
